Connect to Salesforce

The first time you open the pane it asks you to choose a mode:

  • Demo mode: sample Account, Contact and Opportunity data, so you can try everything without a connection. Nothing is saved to an org, and the add-in makes no network requests at all.
  • Connect to Salesforce: your org’s real objects and fields.

The context line at the top of the pane always shows which mode you are in: an amber dot beside Demo, or a green dot beside your org’s address once you are connected. The footer states the connection in full, naming the org and the user you are signed in as. You can switch modes at any time from ⚙ Settings.

Your admin sets up the org once, first. If nobody has done the org setup yet, the sign-in will not complete. The most common gap is the Enable CORS for OAuth endpoints setting, which shows up as “Can’t reach Salesforce.” after you sign in.

  1. Enter your Salesforce org URL. This is your My Domain address, for example https://yourcompany.my.salesforce.com.
  2. Click Connect to Salesforce.
  3. A Salesforce login window opens. Sign in as you normally would and approve access.

The pane then loads your org’s objects and fields. You stay signed in between sessions; use Sign out in Settings to disconnect.

That is all most orgs need. The add-in signs in through the app that comes with the Sliick Docs package. If your admin has told you to use your org’s own External Client App instead, open Advanced in Settings and paste in the consumer key they gave you. Leaving it blank uses the packaged app.

Everything the add-in shows you respects your Salesforce permissions: you only see objects and fields you already have access to.

You enter the org URL once per computer. The add-in keeps its settings in the browser it runs in, so a second computer, or Word on the web as well as Word on the desktop, needs it again.

After you sign out, the pane names the org it is pointed at and offers Use a different org… beside the sign-in button, which opens Settings with the cursor in the org URL box. Changing the org there clears everything the old one loaded, including templates, fields and your test record, so nothing from one org can follow you into another.

A sandbox and a production org are different orgs. If you pasted a consumer key under Advanced, each org needs its own.
