Insert merge fields
- Click in the Word document where you want the value to appear.
- On the Build tab, find the field. Use the search box if the list is long.
- Click the field. The tag is inserted at your cursor, for example
{{Account.Name}}.
When the document is generated, {{Account.Name}} becomes the actual account name. Recently used fields float to a Recent section at the top of the list.
Formatting is automatic
Section titled “Formatting is automatic”The add-in adds the right format for the field type, so numbers and dates come out looking right:
| Field type | Tag inserted | Example output |
|---|---|---|
| Currency | {{Opportunity.Amount:currency}} | $50,000.00 |
| Percent | {{Opportunity.Probability:percent}} | 75.00% |
| Date | {{Opportunity.CloseDate:date}} | written the way the template’s locale writes dates |
| Checkbox | {{Account.Active__c:checkbox}} | [X] or [ ] |
| Picklist | {{Opportunity.StageName:label}} | the picklist label, not the API value |
You can edit a tag by hand if you want a different format. The formats are the same ones a designed template uses; see Merge field formats.
Parent fields
Section titled “Parent fields”Parent fields reach across lookups, up to five levels: {{Account.Owner.Email}} pulls the account owner’s email.
Insert with options
Section titled “Insert with options”Every field row has a ⋯ button that opens an options panel, where you can:
- pick a different format;
- choose a locale, for example German formatting, where
{{Amount:currency:de_DE}}renders 1.234,50; - set If blank, show text, for example
{{Description|No notes on file}}; and - 📌 pin the field to the top of the list.
Insert and Cancel are in the bar at the bottom of the pane, and the ‹ chevron at the top left goes back to the field list. Opened on a tag that is already in the document, the same panel says Update instead of Insert.
Date and date-time styles
Section titled “Date and date-time styles”On a Date or Date/Time field, the Format list offers named styles instead of one fixed pattern:
| Style | What it gives you |
|---|---|
| Short | all numbers |
| Medium | month abbreviated |
| Long | month spelled out |
| Full | weekday included |
| ISO | 2026-09-05, the same in every locale |
Each style is written the way the locale writes it, so one template reads correctly in every country you send it to: {{CloseDate:long}}, or {{CloseDate:long:de_DE}} to pin one locale. On a Date/Time field the list is split into Date (no time) and Date & time groups, and the time styles are written with a hyphen: {{CreatedDate:datetime-long}}.
Custom pattern… is the last entry. Pick it and type a Java date pattern, such as d MMMM yyyy or dd/MM/yyyy HH:mm, up to 64 characters. Wrap literal letters in single quotes ('week' w). A pattern says exactly what to print, so the locale picker greys out while one is in use, and it does the same for ISO.
If your org is on an older Sliick Docs version, the named styles are not offered; the custom pattern box still is.
